Stamos was born on August 19, 1963, in Cypress, California, to Loretta (née Phillips) and William “Bill” Stamos, two-generation Greek-American restaurateurs. His family name is Stamatopoulos in its original form.

Stamos worked for his father’s restaurants when he was younger, and as a teenager, he had a job flipping burgers around Orange County. He participated in the marching band at John F. Kennedy High School where he went to school.

He went to his first Beach Boys performance when he was 15 years old. A passionate admirer, he eventually went on tour with the group.

While he had intended to enroll at Cypress College for the 1981 term, with the consent of his parents, he missed his first semester in order to concentrate on beginning an acting career. He was cast in his first role on General Hospital after just three weeks.
