Leagues Cup 2023: Pachuca president Jesus Martinez dismisses the Leagues Cup: It's not what they say

Pachuca was eliminated in its first game in the Leagues Cup, losing 5-3 on penalties after a goalless draw against Houston Dynamo.

With a poor showing in Liga MX, the Tuzos did not participate in the first round of the Leagues Cup because they were the Mexican champions when the tournament was designed.

Their debut was on Wednesday and they fell to finish their participation in the tournament between MLS and Liga MX teams.

Jesus Martinez, president of Grupo Pachuca and owner of the Tuzos and Leon, recognises the potential of the Leagues Cup, but for now, he says, it is not the business they want to make it out to be.

"They are confusing people. Firstly, it's not the business they say it is. It's more convenient for me that the Libertadores returns; firstly, because of the sporting side, and secondly, I'm just going to give you an example: we would have to play 10 Leagues Cup matches for one Libertadores match. So, don't confuse people.

"The Leagues Cup is a project that is there so that tomorrow it can be a great commercial and sporting project," he told ESPN.

The desire to return to the Copa Libertadores

He also stressed that the Libertadores provides an opportunity for teams that have fewer opportunities to participate in international events and that they, as the ownership group, will support the tournament to consolidate it, but not for now it is not for economic benefit.

"When have you ever seen Puebla, Mazatlan or Tijuana have official international tournaments? We have to fine-tune a lot of Liga MX, I agree, but it's not a bad step. It's a great step for the player to internationalise, for our countrymen over there to see them more? When did you imagine they were going to see Puebla? Puebla were playing in friendlies, but Puebla in New York is an impressive record".

However, Martinez remains keen to return to the Copa Libertadores, with or without MLS, and is confident that the new commissioner of the Mexican Football Federation, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, will do what is best for Liga MX.

"We don't have to be thinking if Messi, if Busquets, if this.... We have to go, for our part, to look for that great desire to be in the Libertadores, for the growth of our football. That is the most important thing," said the director.
